How To Get Full Time Job As A Teaching Assistant At ADAPT

These are the steps you need to take before landing employment at Adapt. Seeing that you will be working directly with children; you must be certified and that includes taking a written examination. It's New York State law.

You want to get hired right? So, first you must register with New York State because you must take that exam. The name of the exam is ATAS 095. Please pay attention because there are different exams on that website and you do not want to register for the wrong exam. Click ATAS095 to register and find out more about exam price and other information.

Once you register, you will be able to select a date, time, and location that you want to take this exam. Exams are held Mondays through Saturdays excluding some holidays and it's by appointment only. Lines are always long so regardless of your appointment time, you want to show up ahead of time. The passing score is 220. You will be notified by email and you will have 45 days to download your test score information because after that, they charge you whenever you request it. But, you need not worry because, exam scores are automatically submitted to Albany by New York State on your behalf. 

You absolutely MUST remember your login information for these websites so write them down in a safe place.

You need to register with Office of Teaching Initiatives. There you will complete your resume. Click Office of Teaching Initiatives.

This office is in Albany and furnishes paper Certificates upon request for a fee after you submit all required documents by mail. These are your child abuse and violence prevention certificates, GED certificate, fingerprint cards, and citizenship clearance. Remember these have to be mailed to Albany by you.

 Click certificate requirements for the physical mailing address. Your DASA Certificate and test scores are sent to your teach account in Albany by the state. It doesn't matter if you are already fingerprinted by the Board of Ed. Albany needs your prints on cards so visit get your fingerprints done at any precinct for a fee of course. They provide the cards.

To register for a Teach account for the first time you will have to register at NY.GOV first. Then you will navigate to the NYSED website where you will click teach self registration, check the box and then click create account.

Certification Requirements For Teaching Assistants

Requirements for Level 1 Teaching Certificate - valid for 3 years.
  1. Education - High School Diploma, GED
  2. Finger Prints (Finger Prints on card from local Precinct)
  3. New York State Teacher Certification Exam - ATAS 095
  4. Workshop - School Violence Intervention and Prevention
  5. Workshop - Child Abuse Identification
  6. Workshop - DASA - Dignity For All Students Act
  7. Citizenship Clearance
  8. School District Recommendation (if you are already working as a Para, the Principal or Director takes care of the recommendation for you. )

Get Hired-You have done all that is required, now what?

Login back into your Teach Account to make sure there are no issues with your documents. If everything looks good submit an application for your paper certificate. Paying for it with a credit card speeds up the process. The cost used to be $35 so check for pricing. 

In a matter of days your Level 1 paper certificate will arrive and voila! you are on your way and you will get hired before the year ends. You are on your way to getting a job with benefits, paid vacation, retirement plan, dental and health insurance, 10 paid sick days, union representation and more.

Now it's time to get hired. With your your Teaching Assistant Certificate you can either match down to the office at 175 Lawrence Ave or the 160 building, submit it online along with your resume, workshop certificates, and High School Diploma / GED which ever way you want. You can even do both.

 Going to the job site in person gets you faster results. You can relay your desire and ask the Director about any possible openings. Once you visit the website recruiting you will see all jobs and requirements.

Like I said, you are half way to get hired before the year ends in School-age or Preschool as long as there's a vacancy. You never know they may place you in Manhattan. 

You see, you may have already been working with a Special needs child and that's your experience right there providing it's 6 months or more. 

I don't know about other companies but, if you decide to seek employment at ADAPT in Brooklyn as a Teaching Assistant, the Director submits this experience data (school district recommendation) on your behalf so, that's one less criteria to worry about. 

( Note, the Director can only do this for you once you've taken care of everything else - have a GED or High School Diploma, pass the basic exam (which you can request to take in your language, if English is not your strong suit, complete 3 workshops which must be submitted along with fingerprint cards to Albany.

To advance and increase your pay, after a year of work, you can apply for level 2 or 3 certification but you will need to submit to your teach account college credits, (just go to your registrar's office and they will submit them to Albany on your behalf. 

Be sure to walk with Albany's address as you will need it when filling out the form at the registrar's office.  DASA workshop was recently added so if you haven't done the DASA workshop do it and provide your director / Principal with copies of your DASA certification receipt so he or she can take care of your Experience section.  After that submit an application online at TEACH for your certificate.
